- W2186947512 abstract "Basaltic volcanism is an important process in shaping largeareas of the Earth’s surface, not only in continental extensionalenvironments and at the ocean floor.This special issue contains a collection of fifteenpapers that are dedicated to recent researches on variousaspects of continental basaltic magmatism from its mantleroots via the ascent paths of the melt to the surfacewhere different styles of volcanism take place eruptinglavas or through explosive volcanism depositing varioustypes of pyroclasts. Two of the fifteen were publishedearlier (Downes et al. 2015; Herrero-Hernandez et al.2015). Continental basaltic volcanism also contributesto the total terrestrial sedimentary budget not only byits primary pyroclastic deposits but also their reworkedvarieties. Most of the papers result from presentations atthe BASALT 2013 conference, which took place fromApril 18–24, 2013, in Gorlitz, Germany (Buchner et al.2013). The conference was organized by the SenckenbergMuseum of Natural History Gorlitz and co-organized bythe International Association of Volcanology and Chemistryof the Earth´s Interior (IAVCEI)—particularlyits Commission on Monogenetic Volcanism—and the“Sachsische Landesstiftung Natur und Umwelt” LaNUAcademy). Since the conference was held in the heart ofEurope in Germany with accompanied field excursions toPoland and the Czech Republic, many contributions arerelated to the Cenozoic Central European Volcanic Province(Fig. 1). However, there was also a variety of contributionsabout Mesozoic and Cenozoic basaltic rocksworldwide. This variety is reflected in this issue.The issue brings together studies on different aspectsof basaltic magmatism. Thus, this volume contains petrologicaland geochemical studies spanning from studies ofmantle peridotites to those on volcanic rocks as well aspapers presenting geophysical data and interdisciplinaryinterpretation." @default.
