Thestudy wasconducted in10laboratories wheretheminimuminhibitory concentrations ofsixantibiotics (carbenicillin, cefoxitin, chloramphenicol, clindamycin, penicillin G,andtetracycline) were determined against 10bacterial strains onWilkins-Chalgren agarprepared by three manufacturers. Minimuminhibitory concentrations falling onthemodes varied from57to80%ofalldeterminations andonthemodeorwithin ±1log2 dilution ofthemodefrom87to100%within eachlaboratory. Whendatafromall laboratories werepooled, minimuminhibitory concentrations fromeachlaboratoryagreed withtheoverall mode48to71%ofthetime, withanoverall agreement at±1log2 dilution of96%.Thisdegree ofreproducibility allows forrecommendation oftheprocedure asareference method. Results withthree ofthetest strains wereveryconsistent, andthese strains arerecommended ascontrol strains: Clostridium perfringens ATCC 13124, Bacteroides fragilis ATCC 25285and Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron ATCC29741. Theminimuminhibitory concentrations forthese strains wereonthemodeorwithin ±1log2 dilution ofthemode98, 99,and99%ofthetime, respectively. Theremaining anaerobic bacteria are recommended asreference strains. Procedures that havebeenrecommended and usedforantimicrobial susceptibility testing of anaerobic bacteria areprincipally thesameas thoseforaerobic andfacultatively anaerobic bacteria. Thesemethods include broth dilution (both macro-andmicro-), agardilution, and agardiffusion methods. Therehavebeensubstantial differences intheindividual techniques thathavebeendescribed within eachclass of methods.
