• W2187242088 abstract "Received 10 March, 2014 Received in revised form 26 March, 2014 Accepted 02 April, 2014 The two main objectives of this study were to determine the prevalence of depression and its association with socio-demographic characteristics; and to determine the relationship between elevated blood pressure (BP), random blood sugar (RBG) and the level of haemoglobin (Hb) with the severity of depressive symptoms. The study was a cross-sectional study conducted in a large mall in Riyadh city in 2012. Screening for depressive symptoms was done by using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI-II) scale. Weight and height were taken to measure the body mass index (BMI) of the participants. The measurements were done using standard methods routinely at primary health care centers. Of the 787 participants, 397 (50.4%) were males; while 549 (69.8%) of the participants were married. Also, 527 (67%) of the total number of participants were Saudis. Among 787 participants, 323 (41%) had normal mood variation, while the remaining 463 (59%) were classified between moderate and extreme depression. Only 210 (21.2%) participants had normal BMI. Normal BP reading was found in 672 (85.4%) participants. RBG level was normal in 687 (87.3%) participants. Anemia was present in 22 (5.7%) males and 79 (19.9%) females. There were statistically significant differences between gender, nationality and other socio- demographic characteristics. More than half of the sample size had different symptoms of depression which ranged between moderate and severe depression. However, there was no significant association between depression and chronic disease in the population sampled." @default.
