- W2187502783 abstract "Tove Jansson, Sculptor's Daughter: A Childhood Memoir, with an introduction by Ali Smith, translated by Kingsley Hart London, Sort Of Books, 2013, 162 pp., 24 b&w illustrations, £9.99. ISBN 9781908745330Comprising a collection of short stories, Tove Jansson's Sculptor's Daughter provides an autobiographical insight into the childhood of the Finnish author, best known for her Moomin books. While the content naturally differs from that of her perennially popular children's books, the writing style is instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with her earlier works, with characteristic features such as the peppering of snippets of advice on all manner of topics - from things to attend to in a boat, to how to tell whether a piece of flotsam that has washed ashore has already been claimed, and how to deal with the dangers of pile carpets. While the book is focused on the exploits of the young Tove, its title, and much of its content, refer to her father Viktor Jansson - an eminent Finnish sculptor active during the first half of the twentieth century, whose works can still be seen in the Kaisaniemi and Eira areas of Helsinki, as well as along the city's main esplanade. Taught and influenced by the Finnish sculptors Viktor Malmberg and Robert Stigell, the works for which Jansson is best known are primarily of bronze or granite, and include fountains with playful, humorous and lively themes, and sculptures of female nudes or children, often using his family as models. It quickly becomes clear when reading this book that both parents' careers (Jansson's mother, Signe 'Ham' Hammarsten-Jansson, was a Swedish graphic artist and illustrator) played a significant role in shaping her childhood. The stories that make up the book drift between the young Tove's solo adventures around the family's home-cum-studio and the city of Helsinki, and her family life, which clearly revolved very much around her father's career. With distinctly un-childlike insights provided throughout the book, from the necessity of considering the author, reader and publisher when illustrating, to how 'terribly embarrassing' it is when strangers tried to suggest motifs to the sculptor, it feels somewhat unclear as to whether Jansson's adult life influenced her narration, or whether her childhood influenced her later career choice. The blurring continues into the combination of the real and the abstract, as clarified in the introduction by Ali Smith, and how much fictitious material has been woven into the narrative, and here Jansson's masterful storytelling ability comes into play, with the boundaries between reality and fantasy becoming distorted and made fluid.Combining nineteen short tales, Sculptor's Daughter can be read as separate individual stories, although its captivating nature and narrative make it easy to devour the entire book in one sitting, aided by the masterful assembly which has maintained interlinking threads throughout the book. In a style reminiscent of much of her other work, and indeed much Finnish literature, nature plays a key role throughout, with the sea and its power and mystery a recurring theme. Likewise, Jansson's distinctive practice of anthropomorphizing all elements of nature is apparent, with the darkness and icebergs, to name just two, taking on human traits. Even flotsam cannot escape, with The Bays featuring the young Jansson's description of how 'empty bottles and old tins crept up out of the sea and looked ashamed of themselves'.Natural phenomena are not the only things to which Jansson ascribes human characteristics. …" @default.
