- W2187539306 abstract "Orthogonal code-hopping multiplexing (OCHM) is a sta- tistical multiplexing scheme designed to increase the number of allow- able downlink channels in code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems. OCHM makes it possible to use orthogonal code resources more effi- ciently than the conventional dedicated codeword allocation/multiplexing schemes in cdma2000 and wideband CDMA (WCDMA) systems. Collision- allowable hopping in the OCHM system yields a statistical multiplexing gain. However, collisions may degrade the bit error rate (BER) perfor- mance. A group-mode hopping scheme is proposed as a collision mitigation scheme for OCHM. The performance of the proposed scheme is evaluated using numerical analysis and simulations. Index Terms—Code collision, code division multiple access (CDMA), group mode, hopping allocation, orthogonal code-hopping multiplexing (OCHM). I. INTRODUCTION Most data applications will be served based on IP packets in 3G and beyond-3G wireless communication systems. Compared to voice traffic, packet-type traffic exhibits lower channel activities and higher burstiness. These characteristics of the packet-type traffic may result in an inefficient use of allocated channels, since an increase in the number of low-activity users may result in a lack of available code channels. Several schemes have been proposed for solving the lack of code channels, including quasi-orthogonal code (QOC) (1) and multiscrambling code (MSC) (2). However, these schemes partially lose the orthogonality among downlink channels. Orthogonal code- hopping multiplexing (OCHM) (3) was proposed as another solution to efficiently accommodate bursty packet-type traffic in conventional code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems with a given number of orthogonal codewords through statistical multiplexing. Through random code hopping, OCHM provides a statistical multiplexing gain (SMG), increases the utilization of orthogonal codewords, and, finally, improves the overall system capacity (4). The objective of this paper is to propose a group-mode hopping scheme that decreases the number of collisions through proper hopping patterns to mitigate the impact of code collisions and enhance the system performance of OCHM.
