- W2187900410 abstract "In this chapter we discuss two approaches to supporting students learning recursion, and then introduce a third simpler approach that may in some circumstances prove to be useful. The first approach is exemplified by the SCENT advisor which aims to provide relevant advice to novice programmers on their recursive programming strategies. In this approach knowledge of typical novice strategies is internalized in the system in order that it can understand and comment upon student code. The second approach is illustrated by the PETAL support environment in which students choose among three Programming Environment Tools (PETS) that scaffold their use of three different mental model-level problem solving methodologies as they solve recursive problems. Knowledge of the different problem solving methodologies is externalized in PETAL’s design, although the system itself does not contain any internalized knowledge of student mental model-level reasoning. The third approach, reified in the G.E.N.I.U.S. PL/C advisor, does an end run around the need for deep knowledge by taking advantage of idiosyncracies in the relationship between a novice programmer and a supposed expert. Although in many ways this is a half-baked approach, it suggests the possibility of achieving robust and helpful performance with little knowledge engineering.Keywordsrecursive problem solvingknowledge-based advicescaffolding environmentsignorance-based reasoning" @default.
