- W2187953322 abstract "Oxidation of sulfide minerals exposed in the walls of open pit hard-rock mines is frequently the dominant source of solutes of environmental concern when pit lakes form. Costs to close and provide long-term management at open pit mines can thus depend strongly on the sulfide oxidation rate in pit wall rock. A review of wall-rock oxidation studies found that a diffusion-limited “shrinking core” model is usually applied, but accuracy is limited by poor constraints on conditions at depth in the blast face (fragment size, porosity, moisture) and lack of direct measurements. Model verification at mine sites where predictions preceded lake formation suggests that models underpredict wall rock oxidation rates by a factor of 5 to 10. This paper presents a rapid and simple method to directly measure in-situ sulfide oxidation rates in mine benches and walls using oxygen consumption from a chamber sealed to the surface of the rock. Measured sulfate production rates in pit benches (sulfide S from 0.1 to 16% S) ranged from ~2 - 5 kg SO 4 /m 2 -yr in a 10-yr old surface, to over 40 kg SO 4 /m 2 -yr in benches less than 2 years old. Results from three mines indicate that oxidation rate was not correlated to near-surface sulfide S or paste pH, suggesting that physical processes were more important than chemical." @default.
