- W2188125587 abstract "Doctors and informed members of the public know the radiographer as a professional who produces diagnostic images using not only X-rays but also ultrasound, magnetic resonance, and nuclear medicine, while the radiologist is a doctor who reports on the images or uses imaging to perform medical interventions. Ultrasound and fluoroscopic examinations are observer dependent; the quality and relevance of the images produced depends on the skill and knowledge of the person performing the study. In the past these examinations have been performed by radiologists but in many radiology departments today radiographers perform and report ultrasound examinations (figure 1), perform barium enemas and other fluoroscopic procedures, inject contrast media, oversee intravenous pyelography, CT and MRI examinations and even report on films taken in casualty departments. The public can have confidence in these changes because radiographers are trained to do these new jobs—eg, in the UK radiography is now a university course of study and those undertaking the extended roles are given extra training which often involves a further postgraduate degree or diploma. - W2188125587 title "In the UK and elsewhere radiographers have taken over some of the work traditionally done by radiologists and this is blurring the boundaries between the two professions. Radiologists may wonder where such changes will lead. This article explores the reasons behind these changes, the practical and medicolegal constraints, and the effect of such changes on the provision of radiology services in the future." @default.
