• W2188214610 abstract "Background and purpose: Febrile seizure is the most common convulsive disorder which occurs in 2% - 4% of children under six years of age. This study determined the epidemiology and clinical pattern of first attack of febrile seizure in children admitted to Boo Ali Sina Hospital, Sari, Iran. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study conducted in March to October 2011 all children (6 months to 6 years old) who were admitted with the diagnosis of febrile seizure in pediatric department of Boo Ali Sina Hospital affiliated to Mazandaran University of Medical Sciences were studied. The data was analyzed using SPSS V. 16 and applying chi-square at the significance level of P< 0.05. Results: A total of 250 children were studied among whom 134 were male and 126 were female. The peak incidence of fever and convulsions was seen more among those aged 1-2 years. The most common underlying causes were respiratory infections (56.8%), followed by gastroenteritis and fever with unknown reason. In 91.3% of cases seizures occurred within the first 24 hours after onset of fever. The commonest forms of seizures generalized were tonic clonic and simple febrile convulsion. There was no significant correlation between age, sex and the type of seizure P <0.05. Laboratory investigations revealed no significant association between febrile seizure and electrolyte disturbances (Na, k, BS, Ca). However, anemia was found in 56.8% of the patients. The seasonal incidence of fever and convulsions was more common in winter (68.4%). Conclusion: Positive family history and genetic background were important factors in the incidence of febrile seizure at ages 1-2 years. Using anti-febrile drugs were ineffective in the prevention of febrile seizures. This study showed that routine blood chemistry analyses are not necessary in children with febrile seizures and should only be ordered based on the patient's condition or medical history." @default.
