- W2188293648 abstract "Na,Co02d (0.5Xl) crystals were grown by a flux method. The largest Na,Co02.s crystal size was 10~10~0.5 m3, and the crystal phase depended on the composition of the flux. Crystals grown from a flux of NaCl mixed with Na2C0, and B203 and crystals grown from a flux of Na2COp mixed with B20, were identified as Nao.&oO14 (y phase) and Nao.,Co02., (a phase), respectively. The in-plane (ab-axis) thermoelectric properties of each phase were measured The electrical resistivity @) of the y phase and the a phase showed the almost same metallic temperature dependence except for an unusual increase of p. at 5-20 K and the different magnitude. The value of p, and p. were 1.3 mRcm and 30 mQcm at 300 K, respectively. The Seeheck coefficient (8 of each phase exhibited the different S(n behavior and the , different magnitude, and the values were 100 pVK and 150 pVK at 300 K, respectively. Schematic structures of the Na,Co02 system are illustrated in Fig. 1. The fundamental structure of the Na,Co02 consists of an alternate stack of a highly vacant Na atoms layer and a Cd12-type Coo2 sheet parallel to the c-axis. The Na ions are inserted between the Coo2 sheets with a trigonal prismatic (P: fi and y phase) or octahedral (0 a phase) environment. The packing differs in terms of the number of sheets within the unit cell: 2 (y phase) or 3 (a and fi phase). Reflecting the layered crystallographic structure, the thermoelectric properties of this compound are highly anisotropic.” In addition, we believe that the electrical properties of the Na,CoO2 system are highly dependent on the number of sodium ions. Therefore, large crystals from each phase are required to accurately measure the thermoelectric properties of the system. However, it is difficult to grow large Na,Co02 crystals because of the decomposition at high temperature and the layered structure of this compound.
