- W2188790388 abstract "There are several feed additives and strategies that can be used alone or combined in current production systems to decrease the carbon footprint contribution of ruminant production to the environment. Ionophores can improve feed efficiency by reducing dry matter intake with little variation in average daily gain (ADG), mostly in feedlot conditions, or increase ADG, mostly in pasture conditions, because of shifts in the ruminal microbial population, increased of propionate to acetate ratio, and decrease of protein deamination in the rumen. Probiotics may improve growth, milk production, feed efficiency, increased ruminal pH, and concomitant reduction in lactic acid production. Essential oils (EO) are derivatives of phenylpropanoids and terpenoids that have been hypothesized to modify the dynamics of protein degradation in the rumen by decreasing microbial activity, anaerobic fungi, and methanogenesis, or EO could affect the pattern of bacterial colonization of substrates, particularly those rich in starch. Vaccines have been shown to be a potential inhibitor of CH4 production by ruminants, but methanogen population may change due to unintended strain selectivity in the rumen, resulting in low efficacy of current vaccines. Saponin, a surfactant-like compound, may have antimicrobial activities by binding with cholesterol molecules in the cell membranes and causing the rupture of the membrane. Condensed tannins (CT), a complex polyphenolic compound, bind to protein, metal ions, and polysaccharides and render them unavailable to the ruminal microbes. The CT indirectly reduce the production of CH4 by binding to the dietary fiber and directly by inhibiting the growth of methanogens." @default.
