- W2189244895 abstract "The publication, in 1915, of the book The Mechanism of Mendelian Heredity by Thomas Hunt Morgan (1866-1945) and collaborators is regarded as a landmark in the foundation of the so-called chromosome theory of inheritance. However, diverging opinions on this theory were still presented for several years. Morgan’s work provided an empirical support for the compatibility between Mendel’s laws and the chromosome dynamics in meiosis, and proposed that the Mendelian factors (later called genes) were linearly distributed along the chromosomes. More than a decade afterwards, when most voices against the theory had already been silenced, the Brazilian cytologist Salvador de Toledo Piza Jr. (1898-1988) published a small monograph challenging the chromosome theory and proposing a new view, that he called the plastinema theory. This paper analyses Toledo Piza Junior’s monograph and its repercussion in the Brazilian scientific context" @default.
