- W2189447144 abstract "The transportation system considered in this work is an urban transportation network integrating public and private modes of transport. The paper centres round an on-line informalion service able to provide the best intermodal paths between any pair of stations in the network. Such paths vary according to the system dynamics, depending essentially on the traffic conditions. Introduction and model An intermodal transportation network which realizes the integration among urban public transportation services and private traffic is considered in this paper. In order to suit its peculiar characteristics, the considered transportation network is modelled as a Discrete Event Dynamic System I 11,121. The behaviour of the discrete event system modelling the transportation network is studied by means of a special purpose designed simulation tool, which is the kernel of an urban traffic simulation program, designed to pursue different objectives, One of these is to provide the users of the intermodal transportation network with some real-time updated information about its state. Such an on- line information system could lead to a fair distribution of the traffic on the different paths and modes of transport, resulting in an improvement of the system performance. In this paper, attention is .just focused on the functioning of the information system included in the simulation tool. In I3 I the authors presented a first version of the on-line information system in which the system is capable of providing a customer with information, based on real-time data, about the best multimodal paths to reach his destination, starting from the point where he currently is. The users' requests are satisfied by using a special algorithm, essentially consisting of an ad-hoc modified version of the Dijkstra algorithm 141. Such an algorithm can also provide more than one path to reach the required destination; in particular, the k, bl, best paths are determined by applying the inethod proposed by Yen 1.51, In this paper, the proper applicability of the approach is extended by explicitly considering the dynamic evolution of the transportation network and, in particular, of the travelling times on links. A technique to estimate the future values of the variables under concern has been developed and included in the simulation tool. In this way, the simulator can provide the information system, not only with information about the present state of the network, but also with reliable estimates of its future behaviour.
