• W2189567461 abstract "Risk to New Zealand’s “Clean Green Image” in foreign markets for food products is often cited as a reason for New Zealand to continue to ban commercial release of genetically modified organisms (GMOs). In order to explore the reality and intensity of such a risk, we have undertaken a series of in-depth interviews in European countries with companies and organisations that were deemed by Trade New Zealand to be major ‘gatekeepers’ or key suppliers in the European food sector. Instead of focussing on the GMO issue in isolation, we have explored the wider issue of factors that determine country of origin image in relation to food quality and food safety, and included various potential applications of GMO technology as variables in this overall mix. Highly negative consumer sentiment towards GMOs in Europe seems likely to continue to influence food buyers. This negative sentiment appears likely to transfer from GM crops to non-GM and organic versions of the same crop due to fears concerning accidental mix-up or contamination. However, we found no evidence that presence of GMOs in a country cause negative perception in general of food from that country. Also, it appears that GM applications in non-food areas are unlikely to damage perceptions of country image in relation to supply of food products from that country." @default.
