- W2190213312 abstract "This chapter introduces a molecular model of the mammalian retinal disc membrane based on results derived from the application of methods of the visualization of structure within the plane and the thickness of the membrane element. A current hypothesis of the main functional aspect of the photoreceptor membrane claims that the physical signal (photons) generates a transduction mechanism. This step involves the release of a messenger that reaches the plasma membrane of the outer segment. In turn, the electrical and permeability properties of the disc membrane are modified, thus transmitting secondary signal to the synapse. This transmembrane control process, which amplifies the light signal at the level of the disc membrane, is associated with an amphipatic glycoprotein rhodopsin, which contains amino acid sequences that favor the interaction both with hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains of the bilayer. An important step in this transduction mechanism is the dissociation of a covalent bond between the opsin and the chromophore, which involves short-range intramolecular conformational change. The second important event is a change in the permeability of the plasma membrane, which may be associated with Ca2+ release from the discs following the transformation of rhodopsin into opsin. The chapter summarizes the hypothesis that highlights the importance of Ca2+ ions as a potential transmitter substance." @default.
