- W219035596 abstract "The main purpose of the study was to examine the role of fathers in upbringing their children among the Maasai People of Kenya. The study sought to examine the following: the nature of assistance and support that husbands give their expectant wives, how fathers are involved in the care and upbringing of their children between the age of birth and three years, the factors that influence participation of fathers in the upbringing of their children and solutions to the challenges faced by fathers in the upbringing of children. The study used a case study research design in which only ten (10) fathers and ten (10) mothers from Maasai Community of Olkiramatian Village in Kajiado District were considered. Structured interview guide was used to collect data from the participants. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively. The study found that the fathers were more involved in paying school fees than taking part in other child upbringing activities like meeting feeding needs of the children, playing with, talking and listening to them. Cultural practices were found to be among the major factors that influenced fathers in their participation in upbringing of their children. Mass media was found to play a crucial role in educating fathers about their roles in upbringing their children. The study suggested initiatives to be undertaken by grass root organizations, movements and churches at community level to educate men about their role in child upbringing process and to counter retrogressive cultural practices prevalent among Maasai community." @default.
