We firstly discuss different concepts of complementarity, from technical jointness to strategic complementarity at the level of the firm, then focusing on the latter as the most relevant one to understand the patterns of eco-innovation adoption and diffusion. Specific evidence on complementarity with regard to drivers of innovation and performances has not been developed so far in eco-innovation applied research. By using an original dataset on eco-innovation adoption in 556 manufacturing firms in Emilia-Romagna (Italy), including structural and performance data at the firm level for 2006-2009, we firstly analyse the drivers of eco-innovation (adoption) taken separately. Then, we verify whether the effect of such drivers on eco-innovation is characterised by some degree of complementarity. The latter is tested, firstly, as the correlation between different eco-innovations and, secondly, as the possible super modularity effect of couples of drivers on ecoinnovation indexes. Results highlight both a significant degree of correlation and complementarity effects. We also test, as another form of complementarity, the relationships between eco-innovation and economic performance of the firms in 2006-2008 and early-2009 during the crisis. Ecoinnovating firms generally perform better than non eco-innovating firms in the region.
