- W21934477 abstract "Abstract The action of barbiturates on excitatory and inhibitory synaptic mechanisms has been examined in a variety of systems in the vertebrate CNS. These results indicate that in the vertebrate CNS barbiturates in anesthetic concentrations depress synaptic excitation and prolong synaptic inhibitions which are mediated by GABA. These effects are likely to arise in part from alterations in the response of the post-synaptic membrane to the released transmitter since the action of putative excitatory and inhibitory transmitters are similarly affected. In addition, barbiturates appear to activate the GABA receptors on primary afferents as well as on motoneurons. The resulting depolarization of primary afferents should reduce the evoked release of transmitter from primary afferent synapses, while the hyperpolarization of CNS neurons would decrease their excitability. All of the actions of barbiturates reported above would act to decrease the overall level of excitability in the CNS and would be expected to contribute to varying degrees to the depressant actions of these drugs on the CNS." @default.
