• W2196350070 abstract "In Chapter 4, we discuss the important phenomenon of wave ducting, also called wave trapping. Ducting occurs when a propagating gravity waves becomes trapped between two reflecting levels, for example the ground surface and an elevated layer where wave reflection occurs. Wave reflection occurs when there is a discontinuity in the wave dispersion, as for example a sharp change in Brunt–Väisälä frequency. Within the duct, upward and downward propagating waves interfere to produce a standing wave which can travel large horizontal distances with little attenuation. We shall see that wave ducting can be caused discontinuities in temperature (the temperature duct) and velocity jets in the direction of wave propagation (the wind duct) or a combination of both. Ducted waves are eigensolutions to the Taylor–Goldstein equation, i.e., wave frequency and horizontal wavenumber come in unique pairs. In many ways gravity wave ducting is analogous to standing waves in a pipe organ of a violin string. As with these later waves, atmospheric ducted waves exist a modes, i.e., a fundamental mode and higher harmonics." @default.
