To speak first of nuance, books and articles published in the last ten years have helped flesh out our understanding of the spatial and psychological dimensions of the medieval economic revolution. In the spatial dimension, we now have a much more precise picture of the spread of people throughout South China, probably the key stimulant to economic change during the late Tang and Song. In 1982, Robert Hartwell elaborated on Skinner's regionalization of China to provide a provocative model of the Tang-Song demographic shift. Since then books and articles by Shiba Yoshinobu (1988), Richard von Glahn (1987),Paul J. Smith (1988,1991),Hugh Clark (1991), and Christian Lamouroux (1990), among many others, have demonstrated the impact of trade, government policy, war, and agricultural technologies on the demographic maturation (and vulnerability) of vast sections of Song China~including Sichuan, Hunan, the Huai River basin, Fu jian,and Jiangnan. Of equal importance, historians have begun to outline the psy chological impact of the medieval economic revolution, especially the effect of money and market relations on elite and popular thought.
