- W2197923993 abstract "This chapter provides details about the gastrointestinal effects of calcitonin in man. Serum calcium also seems to have an influence upon hormones interacting with pancreatic secretion. The effect upon basal and pentagastrin stimulated acid output has been investigated. Whether the inhibitory effects are of any physiological importance depends on the plasma levels of human calcitonin following the injection period. The inhibitory effect ceases with decreasing plasma levels. Calcitonin inhibits pentagastrin stimulated and basal gastric acid secretion in man as well as the stimulated pancreatic exocrine secretion. The inhibition of pancreatic secretion mainly produces a fall in enzyme output, while the volume output is only slightly influenced under different conditions. Calcitonin seems to decrease the bilirubin output possibly by the inhibition of the gall-bladder contraction. Thus, it is suggested that the calcitonin like effect of glucagon on exocrine pancreatic secretion is caused by calcitonin." @default.
