- W2197939737 abstract "Since Alder et. al. reported the transition behavior of the hard-disk system [1,2], the nature of the transition is not full understood yet. The transition is now often called as “Alder transition”. They reported that the transition is the first order, but Halperin, Nelson [3] and Young [4] proposed an alternative melting scenario which is based on the Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) transition. This theory is referred to the Kosterlitz-Thouless-Halperin-Nelson-Young (KTHNY) theory. The KTHNY theory introduced a new phase, a “hexatic phase”, between the fluid and the solid phase. There are two transition densities, ρ i and ρ m which are the transition densities between the fluid and the hexatic phase and the hexatic and the solid phase. With an assumption that two kinds of topological defects, a disclination and a dislocation, are unbound separately, they predicted the two-dimensional solid might melt to the fluid via two KT transition. Another theory was proposed by Chui [5]. He studied the spontaneous generation of grain boundaries, and predicted a first-order transition. Many numerical works followed to clear the order of the Alder transition [6-9]." @default.
