- W2198760176 abstract "Reliability and validity of fertility trends obtained from retrospective surveys, particularly in areas with high levels of illiteracy, are questionable. This paper examines the extent of reporting errors in the birth histories of the 1976 Jordan Fertility Survey (JFS) in an attempt to establish a better understanding of fertility trends. The JFS was carried out in the East Bank of Jordan ad provides retrospective pregnancy history data for ever-married women aged 15-49. The data includes marriage histories, birth histories, breastfeeding, family planning and socioeconomic characteristics of respondents and their husbands. Cohort fertility (birth cohorts) are examined in search for evidence of reporting errors (especially misplacement and omission) with emphasis on features likely to characterize the data in case of errors. Analysis yields convincing evidence of omission and event misplacement in the form of pushing earlier events towards the date of the interview. These errors resulted in too low estimates of fertility for the more distant periods. For the decade preceding the survey, the data appear to be correctly reported, and the analysis shows that the fertility rates remain fairly constant (at a high rate) except for a modest decline among older women. The recent fertility trend (during the 10 years before the survey) from the birth history data is found to be consistent with birth registration trends." @default.
