- W2200648051 abstract "As I move forward through my term as Chairperson for Council on Renal Nutrition (CRN), I am committed to my goal of enhancement in communication from the CRN Executive Committee to all regional and local council members. Projects have begun to update fundamental resources. Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative Evidence Analysis Project is underway to review and update the Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative guidelines. As you would expect, this is a comprehensive project and may take a few years to complete. As guideline revisions become available, future communications will be provided to keep you informed. The National Renal Diet Project team has had several meetings and is well underway to update this important resource. There is a professional and patient guide reference as part of this project. The professional guide provides nutrient recommendations for patients with kidney disease and offers guidelines for patients with diabetes and patients on peritoneal dialysis. The patient guide is a useful tool for patient education on meal planning. If you are working with chronic kidney disease patients and would like to provide commentary or ideas to be considered, your input is welcomed. Please send your information to me, and I will forward to the project committee. Other projects in the planning process include emergency diet with emphasis on food safety, low-income renal meal preparation, low literacy and large print educational material, and cooking for 1 or 2. If you have an interest in these topics and would like to participate on a committee, please contact me or your regional CRN Executive Committee representative. A listing of regions can be found on the National Kidney Foundation (NKF) Web site professional/dietitian. Coming up, this summer will be nominations for regional representatives and alternate representatives for the CRN Executive Committee. Regions 1, 3, and 5 will be accepting nominations. Have you ever considered serving on the board? Do you know what the responsibilities of a board member are? As a regional representative, you will be expected to participate in the annual committee meeting at the Spring Clinical Meeting funded by the NKF, prepare biannual regional reports, and participate in several conference call meetings throughout the year, liaison between national NKF/CRN and local council members for dissemination of information and addressing local concerns. The alternative representative will assist and be able to move to the representative position if a need arises during their term. You may have an opportunity to lead a project or be on a national committee. Each region also has a committee assignment; region 1 is patient education, region 3 is cyber nephrology, and region 5 is resource and research. The time commitment varies, but all the current executive committee members work in a nephrology dietitian position along with managing their Executive Committee projects. Nomination site opens in summer 2015, and elections typically are from October 15 through November 15, 2015. Also this summer, beginning August 1, 2015, CRN will begin accepting nominations for our prestigious annual awards. Awardees are honored at our Spring Clinical Conference; next conference will be in Boston, Massachusetts on April 26 to May 1, 2016. Do you know anyone who stands out in your nephrology practice setting? Have you nominated a colleague for an award? Here is a brief description of awards to get you thinking. The Joel D. Kopple Award honors an individual who has made significant contributions in the field of nutrition. This contribution may be in the area of legislation, clinical practice, education, or research. The individual may be an NKF or CRN member, but this is not required, and they will present a lecture at the annual Spring Clinical Conference. The Outstanding Service Award honors an individual who promotes CRN either with financial support, lobbying, counseling, patient/professional education materials, community support, or renal nutrition research. The Recognized Renal Dietitian honors an individual with exceptional ability demonstrated by their leadership, creativity, or public involvement. The focus is more on a national level. The nominee must be a CRN member. The Regional Recognized Dietitian mirrors the recognized renal dietitian with a focus within their region. The Susan C. Knapp honors an individual for excellence in education. You may find more information regarding these awards on the NKF/CRN Web site click on professional/dietitian. Having had the experience of nominating an awardee and presenting awards at the annual Spring Clinical Conference was awe inspiring for me, and I want you to share this feeling as well. If you feel you have a nomination in mind but need more information, you may go to the Web site and contact your region representative who will help you through the process. In closing for this Chairperson message, I wish you a happy and healthy summer season. I look forward to updating you more in the fall." @default.
