- W2201782837 abstract "Considerable evidence has been gathered demonstrating the involvement of arachidonic acid (AA) metabolism in the pathophysiology of pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) or pre-eclaopsia (PE).In PE, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) but not PGF2alfa production is reduced. Moreover prostacyclin (PGI2) generation is significantly impaired. It follows that in PE the reduced amount of PG12 would not effectively antagonize the vasoconstrictor and platelet-aggregating actions of thromboxane A2 (TXA2). Furthermore, with less PG12, the vasoconstrictor effects of angiotensin II and catecholamines would also not be efficiently opposed. The substances which are the most likely candidates for the PGI2 inhibition are the lipoxygenase products of AA. The lipoxygenase pathway is a type of enzymic lipid peroxidation which can be inhibited by the presence of antioxidants such as vitamin E. Our study on the peripheral plasma concentrations of unsaturated fatty acid hydroperoxides (UFAOOH) and vitamin E show that in pre-eclamptic patie..." @default.
