- W2201939041 abstract "Utilizes the longitudinal design of the Belgian National Fertility Survey to evaluate the influence which the sex of the surviving children and wives' attitudes toward representation of both sexes in her family may have on reproductive planning and action, during 2 5-year periods (1966-70 and 70-75). 3 dependent variables were analyzed: expectation of at least 1 child, birth of at least 1 child, and the degree of achieving the additional number of children expected for each period, at aggregate and individual levels. Results showed that some couples behave as if they had a real desire to have at least 1 more child of each sex, although they are more convincing for couples with 2 or more children than those with only one. The expectation of, and actual arrival of, at least 1 more child among couples with 2 to 4 children was more likely if their children were all of 1 sex and the wife was interested in having children of the other. At least for the 1966-70 period, couples with children of 1 sex were more likely to have more children than they had expected, probably due to an effort to have a child of the other sex. Expectation of at least 1 more child was more frequent among couples with only 1 child when the wife stated a desire to have children of both sexes. (Author's modified)" @default.
