- W2202445340 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter describes medical conditions of aphasia, apraxia, and agnosia. Aphasia is a disturbance of language unexplained by articulatory impairment or sensory loss. Abnormal speech—dysarthria—secondary to paresis, spasticity, incoordination, abnormal movements, or dysphonia is not aphasia, and reading difficulty secondary to poor vision is not alexia. Aphasia is a disturbance of higher cortical function resulting from cerebral damage. Though it can occur in isolation, especially after head injury or stroke, aphasia is often a feature of a dementing illness such as Alzheimer's disease, and most severe aphasies have additional cognitive impairment not related to language. In its broadest sense, apraxia refers to impaired motor activity not explained by weakness, incoordination, abnormal tone, bradykinesia, movement disorder, dementia, aphasia, or poor cooperation. Failure to perform an act at all is not apractic; it should be performed incorrectly. Agnosia is a failure of recognition that is not explained by impaired primary sensation—tactile, visual, and auditory—or cognitive impairment. Agnosia differs from anomia in that the patient can neither name the confronted object nor select it from a group nor match it to a likeness." @default.
