- W2202770680 abstract "This paper describes the river system modelling undertaken in the CSIRO Murray-Darling Basin Sustainable Yields Project and discusses the river modelling framework that was used to connect the various surface and groundwater models that describe the 18 regions within the Murray Darling Basin (MDB). Results are presented that show how the impacts of change in the various reporting regions propagate through the rest of the system. The river modelling framework carries out up to 70 model runs to generate results for each scenario over the 111 year modelling period. There are 6 different types of surface water models used: IQQM, REALM, WaterCRESS, MSM-BIGMOD, Snowy and St-George. The only groundwater model used in the basin is MODFLOW. The models run for a range of time steps form daily, weekly to monthly. The framework considers 216 linkages between models that comprise times series of flows, heights, allocations, storage spills, storage volumes and demands. 59 of the linkages are feedbacks between models with the predominant feedback being between groundwater and surface water models. The interaction between surface water and groundwater models is considered as a three stage process with the time series of river flows generated being converted to heights corresponding to MODFLOW river grid cells. The groundwater models are subsequently run with a 111 year period to reach dynamic equilibrium then run for a further 111 years to produce fluxes that are fed back into surface water models. The groundwater fluxes that are implicit in the surface water calibrations are also taken into account to avoid double accounting of water. The results from this project have provided the most accurate assessment, to date, of the available water resources in the basin. They have shown how the impacts of climate change, farm dam development, groundwater development impact on local regions and throughout the MDB.
