- W2203641178 abstract "Persuasion is a both unavoidable and fundamental element in politics, insofar as all politics implies discourse, and insofar as all political discourse implies partisanship, so that persuading others of one’s point is a very important aspect of political life. Moreover, political discourses are always subjected to the value judgments of the public toward which such discourses are directed. The utterance of value judgments on political discourses happens for two main reasons: first, because politics always has something to do with ‘the common good’, whereby the debate is open as to what the common good is or should be; second, because the very conception of ‘common good’ is part of the broader context of a political system with its norms and values, from which judgment inevitably derives. Moreover, and most importantly, the performative and persuasive character of political discourse importantly depends on the political subject at stake. This paper chooses to focus on Michel Foucault’s study of the Greek notion of parresia, with the aim to delineate a fruitful notion of political subjectivity that fits not only the essence of politics more generally, but also democracy as a specific political system.Against this background, the paper proposes to verify three main claims, namely: (1) that it is possible to distinguish between ‘good’ and ‘bad’ political persuasion; (2) that such a distinction is fruitful for politics in general, and for democracy in particular; (3) that ‘good politics’ is in a fundamental relation to a certain idea of truth. By means of an overview of some of the theories elaborated by Foucault in the first place, but also by Bernard Manin, Giovanni Sartori, Claude Lefort, and Jacques Ranciere, this paper will attempt to get an insight in the political meaning and relevance of discourse, persuasion, subjectivity, and truth." @default.
