- W2204565512 abstract "Tissue scaffolds are critically important for tissue engineering as they have to provide a suitable mechanical and chemical environment in which seeded cells can thrive and function as expected and eventually form fully functional tissue. These requirements are demanding for the materials used to manufacture the scaffolds which of course must be biocompatible. This chapter provides an overview of potentially suitable polymers including those derived from natural sources and synthetic materials as well as ceramics and decellularised matrices. Basic materials characterisation including some assessment of degradation behaviour and the potential impact of sterilisation on ‘performance’ are also discussed. References are made to standards and standard guides which are continuously being developed as the field matures as a means for promoting more consistency in testing and therefore more comparability of published results." @default.
