- W2204992719 abstract "The discovery of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) in 1989 and its linkage to non-A, non-B hepatitis soon led to the recognition of the global importance of this viral infection. Hepatitis C is a major global health problem that deserves widespread active interventions for prevention and control. This chapter reviews what is known about the worldwide prevalence of HCV, discusses regional factors associated with transmission, and outlines prevention strategies to reduce the spread of this infectious disease. As most cases (60–70%) of acute hepatitis C occur without symptoms, data on the incidence of new cases of HCV infection are scarce. Some high-risk groups clearly have a high incidence of this infection. Hepatitis C is believed to be transmitted largely by the transfusion of contaminated blood or blood products and exposure to blood through the reuse of contaminated and/or inadequately sterilized syringes and needles used in medical and dental settings. However, because in many countries the relative contribution of the various modes of infection has not been defined with population based epidemiological studies, only an incomplete picture can be presented at this time. It is suggested that HCV prevention programs are need to ensure that blood supplies and related products are free of infection and that safe injection methods are practiced. The use of disposable syringes for immunizations and injections is particularly crucial in developing countries. Risk-education counseling for professionals and the public is of paramount importance." @default.
