- W2207071830 abstract "This article concentrates on big cities in Western societies. It combines two aspects: general principles and the impact of political systems and cultural environments. Three general principles are formative for the internal structure of cities: (a) accessibility determined by transport technology; (b) the so-called ‘distance-decay’ from center to periphery defined by the social gradient and the land values gradient; and (c) the hierarchical organization of urban space. These principles differ according to political systems. The textbook models of social ecology (Harris and Ullman 1945) are not global models but represent the American liberalism of the inter-war period. They do not cover the historical multi-dimensionality of European cities. There, the sequence of four political systems has created four types of cities with different concepts of the city center. At present, city growth differs according to whether it takes place under private capitalism, in welfare states, or in state capitalism. This is illustrated by the skylines of European, North American, and Russian million-cities, and their urban fringe developments." @default.
