- W2207268637 abstract "A growing database of archaeological radiocarbon dates collected in and around San Diego County, California, provides the opportunity to examine the efficacy of regional cultural phases based on prehistoric population histories. Current models generally hold that continuous sequential cultural phases provide explanatory structure to regional archaeological knowledge despite a complex physical environment spanning beaches, coastal lagoons, mountains, upland areas, and desert. Summed probability functions and numerical modeling methods provide insight into spatiotemporal demographic patterns. Phases defined primarily through lithic typologies do not reflect regional trends in the frequencies of radiocarbon dates, but rather functional adaptations to specific environments. Adjusted for taphonomic biases, the frequency and distribution of radiocarbon dates indicate a number of significant changes in regional prehistory, including the presence of sizable occupation of the region during the early and middle Archaic, changes in the time of arrival and social impacts of the bow and arrow, and a lack of correlation between climatic changes and variability in radiocarbon date frequencies." @default.
