- W2207370316 abstract "A comparison of the work, fertility and nuptiality histories of two groups of Colombian women revealed notable differences. Industrial workers (Workers) had been employed for a longer period o[ their adult lives than had a matched group of housewives (Neighbors). Workers had also borne fewer children than had their Neighbors. The intervening factor which seemed to explain these differences in work and fertility behaviors was marriage, more specifically, the age at first marriage. Workers of all ages were less likely to have married than were Neighbors; and, if they had married, Workers had married later than their Neighbors. For these two groups of Colombian women, the timing of marriage appeared to be an important means of regulating fertility. It is proposed that if such women were provided with more attractive work opportunities, they might choose employment as an option to early marriage and childbearing." @default.
