- W2208452184 abstract "The material FRP (Fibre Reinforced Plastics) was introduced to the yacht manufacturing industry in the early 1960’s. This material became rapidly more popular, as a building material, then the usual building materials such as steel, wood and aluminium. The reason behind this is that it is more durable then the traditional materials. New technologies have brought many benefits to the world. Along with these benefits come problems, one of which is the disposal of solid waste in a most environmental friendly way. At present, the disposal of old FRP boats is done either by: burning them, sinking the boats or they are put in landfill sites. These are easy and relatively cheap ways of disposing the “dead” FRP yachts, however it is not environmental friendly. The aim of this project is to find a method of recycling/ disposing “dead” FRP boats in a most environmental friendly way. This project was undertaken because it covers the interest of the author and the most important reason is that it has great future potential. Relevant information was extracted from the available literature. The information gathered both from this method and from contact with experts in the FRP recycling industry was then analysed in relation to the hypothesis. The analysis revealed the existence of reasonable environmental friendly methods, used by the car recycling industry, to recycle FRP scrap. These methods may well be adapted to dispose old FRP yachts. There are two main driving forces to recycle “dead” FRP yachts, which are regulations and economics. This report concludes that: the “Cradle to Grave” law, which has been imposed by the European Union for the automotive industry, should be enforced for the marine industry in the near future. Once this has been done, the FRP yacht manufacturing industry should adapt a similar recycling circle as the car manufacturing industry. Limitations due to the availability of data and literature has restricted this work, therefore it has been necessary to speculate to an extent, whilst being as subjective as possible. It is the recommendation of this work that further research is conducted in this field." @default.
