- W2208488426 abstract "This study is focusing on an issue of space and style of art by female artists in 1980's. It studies mainly Jenny Holzer, Barbara Kruger, and Guerilla girls who are experimenting their commercial style art in public space. It is not about how effective their strategy was to put their art in public space; but, it rather focuses on the reason why they put their works in public space. In other words, this study tinds out why these artists were out of main art venues around the time in 1980's. It also finds how their attempt has affected to main stream art scene and its historical meaning as well as how these artists use the public space and what the characteristics of each artist are. Focusing on these female artists to study is because they are in commonality not only with their issues but also in their style of display. These artists have raised issues on feminism, commercialism and political power concentration. This study attempts to analyze their ways of approaching to the public to present their political message. In general, these artists are text-oriented and their style of presentation resembles commercial advertisement. They use spaces for commercial purpose such as build boards or empty walls of buildings. Barbara Kruger uses different materials such as t-shirts, film, photographs, posters and billboards to present her works, and she has her unique style in the design of her works. Jenny Holzer's works are mainly composed with text. She also uses t-shirts, photographs, posters and billboards to present her works like Barbara Kruger; but, particularly she put these texts projected on walls or presented on LED monitors. The guerilla girls lampoon galleries and museums by using various materials such as flyers, posters, and billboard. All of these artists attempt to be close to audiences by using public space with unconventional style of works resembling more commercial elements. Women as a minority group, their attempt to use public spaces is to indicate their feminist issues and demand as female artists." @default.
