- W2208782357 abstract "The proliferation and metabolic activity of normal mammalian cells in culture is regulated by polypeptide growth factors and other hormones whose action is mediated by specific cellular receptors. Acute transforming retroviruses contain discrete genomic sequences acquired by recombination between the genome of the virus and host cellular gene sequences. When incorporated within the retrovirus genome such transduced cellular sequences, termed viral oncogenes (v-onc), acquire the ability to induce neoplastic transformation. Experiments linking oncogenes to functional products those are involved in cell regulation, provided a new understanding of the potential role of oncogenes in neoplastic transformation. This chapter discusses in detail the nature and function of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), regulation of cell growth by PDGF, the SSV oncogene, v-sis, codes for the PDGF-2 polypeptide chain, structural and functional identity between the v-sis/PDGF-2 oncogene product and PDGF, and c-sis gene expression in nontransformed cells, The EGF receptor and the v-erb-B oncogene of avian erythroblastosis virus (AEV), EGF receptor, and relationship between the receptor for the mononuclear phagocyte growth factor (CSF-1) and the c-fms proto-oncogene product. The chapter states about the connection between the receptor of the colony stimulating factor and the c-fms protein product, that has been suggested on the basis of immunocrossreactivity between the c-fms product and the CSF-1 receptor with antisera to a v-fms-coded polypeptide." @default.
