- W2209565990 abstract "Because they provide a unique insight into the way that people think and feel focus groups can be used successfully in health communication. In the promotion of modern family planning in sub-Saharan Africa the Johns Hopkins University Population Communication Service (PCS) has found focus groups to be invaluable in providing information necessary to design messages and materials in pretesting materials and in assessing training needs among health-care providers. Focus groups must be kept in check however or their advantage of allowing quick and inexpensive data gathering will be lost in a costly time-consuming muddle. To keep the focus group process quick and responsive to programmatic needs the PCS recommends the following procedures. 1) The number of focus groups should be limited (even 2 may be sufficient) to avoid collecting repetitive results. 2) The group composition should be homogeneous in sex age socioeconomic background and ethnicity to avoid inhibiting some of the participants. 3) Moderators should be recruited and trained carefully. They should be the same sex as the participants and be fluent in the language of the participants as well as in the national language. The success of a focus group depends upon the moderators education personality and training. 4) Focus groups should be brief with the sessions lasting no more than an hour. It may be necessary to pretest materials in more than one session. 5) Proper planning should be done to assure that the focus groups results are analyzed and reported quickly. The final report should be easy to read and should be produced by someone associated with the study rather than an outside analyst." @default.
