- W2211460306 abstract "Studies of crystallization and crystallizers cover a vast range of aspects, thus this chapter focuses particularly on the modeling of stirred crystallizers, especially with reactive crystallization processes. The general population balance equation (PBE) and commonly used numerical methods such as the standard method of moments, the quadrature method of moments (QMOM), and the multi-class method (MCM) are described in detail, together with their strong and weak points. Generally, the moment method, especially the QMOM and its extensions, is still the most widely used in CFD–PBE modeling, particularly in reacting systems, while CFD–PBE modeling with the MCM has been used mainly in nonreacting systems, though it is also suitable for reacting systems. Numerical predictions indicate that incorporation of secondary process models in the reactive crystallization indeed improves the accuracy of simulation, especially when the particle number density in a slurry is high, but great attention must be paid to the selection and usage of these models. Experimental and numerical studies on macromixing and micromixing are described in this chapter, especially the incorporation of probability density function (PDF) micromixing models to describe the micromixing-sensitive precipitation process numerically. Perspective study of the incorporation of fundamental chemical research on crystallization with CFD simulation of crystallizers is suggested, together with other topics in crystallizer modeling and numerical simulation research." @default.
