The work clarifies some misconceptions about the immutability of character and suggests that behavior habits can be modified and improved--and that a focus on character can deliver concrete business results. Over the course of eight years, Kiel's research group at global consulting firm KRW International conducted extensive interviews and gathered survey results from CEOs and members of their organizations across a range of industry sectors and enterprise sizes, then matched that qualitative data with financial results. The full data set, interview and survey questions, and background literature are provided in appendices, and a detailed notes section offers deeper insights and clarifications of key points. The data were analyzed in light of definitions and metrics for character-driven behaviors, derived from a wide-ranging survey of literature in neuroscience, psychology, anthropology, and other disciplines. The result is a simple but powerful model capturing the value of character in leadership. The ROC model seems simple--it's constructed on a basic matrix of four universal character principles: integrity, responsibility, forgiveness, and compassion.
