- W2213353668 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter provides an overview of incretin. According to LaBarre, incretin refers to endocrine factors from the gut with insulinotropic activity. An incretin should fulfill these conditions: (1) it must be released by nutrients, especially carbohydrates, (2) it must stimulate insulin secretion in the presence of elevated blood glucose levels. The chapter discusses some incretin candidates, such as gastrin, secretin, cholecystokinin (CCK), vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), peptide histidine isoleucine (PHI), gastrin-releasing peptide (GRP), enteroglucagons and glucagonlike peptides, and gastric inhibitory peptide (GIP). The gut hormone GIP fulfills all criteria of an incretin: (1) it is released after oral glucose in a dose-dependent manner, (2) it exerts a dose-dependent insulin release under hyperglycemic conditions, and (3) by iv infusion of purified GIP in doses which imitate the physiological secretion rate, the effects of endogenous GIP can be mimicked. At present, the gut hormone GIP is the strongest incretin candidate, however, additional insulinotropic gut factors participate in the net incretin effect." @default.
