- W2213457211 abstract "The occurrence of spermatozoal antibodies in 35 18-29 year old young men who had had a unilateral or bilateral orchidopexia operation for ectopia testis 4-16 years earlier was studied. A testis biopsy was done to evaluate testicular function. Biopsies were done only on the testes formerly operated on and on only 1 testis per individual. Serum samples were obtained before the biopsy and at 10 days and 5 weeks after. They were tested for spermatozoal antibodies by sperm agglutination and immunofluorescent (IFT) techniques. 4 different antigens were tested for. Sera Taken before the present biopsy were compared with those of 207 male blood donors. Sperm agglutinins were found with the same frequency in both groups (3-4%) with the aggluination method. Antibodies detectable by the IFT technique were found more frequently among the patients with the exception of antibodies against the postnuclear cap of the spermatozoa which were not found in either group. Serum antibodies against the tailpiece of the spermatozoa were present in 29% of patients but only in 10% of the blood donors (p less than .04). Spermatozoa antibodies were found in 2 of 9 sera from azoospermic patients. No patients with azoospermia developed new agglutinins after the current biopsies. Of 22 patients with low sperm counts 18 had had a bilateral ectopia; antibody frequency was lower (27%) than among those with high sperm counts (46%). Only 4 of the 19 patients who had had a previous testis biopsy had spermicidal antibodies as compared to 8 of 15 who had not had this operation. After the current biopsies the titre of serum agglutinations were elicited in 6 patients (17%) but were relatively weak and seemed to vanish after 5 weeks. Of these 6 patients with agglutinins 5 had had a testis biopsy 4-16 years earlier. An antigenic stimulation had apparently taken place in relation to the biopsy procedure. The increase differed for each of the 4 spermatozoal antigens and increased mostly for antibodies against the main tail of the spermatozoa. A change in immunoglobulin class was not observed particularly from IgM before the biopsy to IgG afterward. It is thought that conditions which cause extravasation of spermatozoa or spermatozoal antigens may initiate autoimmune reactions. Testis biopsy was shown to produce spermatozoal autoantibodies in 11 of 35 patients within 5 weeks. It is concluded that in the low titres in which these antibodies were found they would not influence male fertility. However repeated test biopsies should be done more cautiously." @default.
