- W2214197129 abstract "Soil derives radioactivity predominantly from the decay of 238U, 235U, 226Ra, 87Rb, and 40K and from various decay products of uranium and thorium radionuclide decay series. Significant amounts of radio nuclides are also accumulated in the soil as a result of nuclear weapon tests and nuclear accidents. The present study is initiated because most residents in Mission (Texas) have problems in their normal lives, i.e. some complain about body rash, short breathing, deformation in child birth, cancer, and ear and eye infections. The Hayes Sammons and Helena chemical plants in Mission are a quarter mile away from each other, and were categorized by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) and the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) as superfund sites in 1987. A laboratory method was developed to determine the activity concentrations of radio nuclides in different sample matrices by the High Purity Germanium (HPGe) gamma spectrometry. Radioactivity of nuclides 238U, 235U, 226Ra, 40 K and 137Cs was measured in Mission (Texas) soils by direct gamma- ray spectrometry. The dry weight soil samples were measured several times directly by the HPGe gamma spectrometer at the close proximity of chemical plants, nearby residential areas and the controlled area 10 miles away from the chemical plants (Chimney Park). The average concentrations of radio nuclides from chemical plants to the controlled area range for 238U: 3.11 0.47 - 42.5 5 Bq kg -1, 235U: 2.14 0.43- 8.75 1.14 Bq kg-1, 226Ra: 35 4- 248 25 Bq kg-1, 40K: 75 11.3- 178 22 Bq kg-1, and 137Cs: 3.11 0.44- 13.2 1.85 Bq kg-1 are presented with their error values. The present concentration content of radio nuclides are compared with concentration values from other countries of the world and found in agreement except 226Ra has higher value in the present study." @default.
