Phaseolin is the major protein in bean seed and has provided evidence for studies of protein diversity. Phaseolin has been especially used for dividing Phaseolus vulgaris in to two major gene pools: the Andean (T-type) and Mesoamerican (S-type) groups. In the present study, 23 Iranian accessions from National Research Station of Kermanshah city and Active Gene Bank of Tehran University and 22 commercial genotypes obtained from National Research Station of Khomein city and CIAT were randomly chosen to determine the phaseolin type by sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The traits of the seeds such as seed length, seed width, seed flattening (determined by J coefficient and H coefficient) and total protein content were evaluated. The J coefficient was estimated by the ratio between the seed length and width and the H by the ratio between the seed thickness and width. Our results showed that genotypes of common bean were from both gene pools (Andes and Central America) with both 'T' (37.77 %) and 'S' (22.22 %) phaseolin types. The 100-seed weight was the main character that grouped these gene pools. Genotypes Naz, KS21537 and KS21456 showed high values of protein content. By comparison of means used in this study, it would be possible to identify the best genotypes to compose a worthwhile source of genetic diversity to apply in the future breeding programs." @default.
