- W2215076511 abstract "The central assumption in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA)analysis is the idea that ideological discourse embodies relations of power and social inequality. What this means is that powerful people can compel those without power to share their point of view on certain issues. In this way, the existing unequal relations within society may be reproduced or even consolidated. Utilizing a CDA analysis, this thesis isto investigate the news discourse used in a number of reports and opinion pieces in two U.S. newspapers with different ideological orientations. The thesis aims to make explicit various opaque aspects of news discourse, with the goal of revealing and denaturalizing the illegitimate relations of dominance concealed within. Thisstudy focuses on the media discourse relating to arecent 34-day conflict between Lebanon and Israel. It analyzes the series of events in that part of the world from the time of the abduction of some Israeli soldiers and the Israeli retaliation to that event in the New York Times and the Washington Times, newspapers of the U.S. political center and right, respectively. The analysis investigates how the discourse features of the macro-structure and the micro-structure may be manipulated in the construction of a newspaper argument. The analysis is carried out in three stages. First, the macro-structure analysis of Teun van Dijk (1988), which focuses on discourse level topics, is used to reveal the basic thematic outline of how each sentence develops its argument. After this, a micro-structure analysis based on Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) is adopted to present this analysis at a clausal level. Given the SFG perspective that every sentence contains three different kinds of meanings, this thesis analyzes sentences using the meaning components of transitivity, Mood, and Theme. Finally, previous qualitative analysis is evidenced by a quantitative corpus analysis, and thereby this study presents a composition of analytic tools. The analysis aims to show howtwo different overall storylines are constructed through the sentences. It demonstrates how distinctive linguistic devices are used in the discourse to reinforce the argument, even as the journalist strives to meet the necessary standards of credibility and integrity. The Washington Times, which is on the right of the U.S. political spectrum, constructs a storyline of a struggle between terrorism and counter-terrorism, maximizing conflict polarization. It invites its readers to share this view of the conflict, legitimizing this choice by focusingon the supposed brutality of the Palestinian militant groups and the supposed justice of the Israeli military actions. It invites its readers to see ‘them’ and ‘us’ as starkly opposed. In contrast, the New York Times, which is politically located in the center, constructs a storyline of a horrific conflict that needs to be stopped because people on both sides are suffering. This storyline attempts to provoke sympathy from readers. By means of its selection of certain positive aspects and its mitigation of certain negative aspects of the social drama, the newspaper tries to minimize polarization. It thereby invites readers to identify ‘them’ with ‘us’ to elicit the readers’ sympathy." @default.
