- W2215299935 abstract "From when man first took to the water he has been looking for better materials to use to keep himself afloat, what started out as a way of surviving, be it gathering food or moving to safer terrain, has evolved like many other things to that of inducing pleasure, be it with speed, challenging the elements or relaxation. From those early days boat building materials have also been evolving, from the initial use of wood, leather and plants it has moved through iron and steel and arrived at the present day where Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) is the primary boat building material used throughout the world for recreational craft manufacture. Since the initial use of FRP in the early 1950’s there has been a pursuit of lighter, stronger and cheaper materials, technology has enabled us to combine a number of chemical elements to produce these advanced composite materials; however during this pursuit there has never been any understanding of the effect this development has been having on the environment around us. Man has been developing and producing these products to enjoy and interact with his local environment however in producing these products he has also been changing the local environment in a number of negative ways, reducing air and water quality, contaminating soil and ground water and producing mountains of un-recyclable waste. In the past 10 years environmental concerns have risen to the forefront of public consciousness, society has recognised these environmental problems and governments around the world have started introducing legislation in an attempt to curb the negative impacts on the environment and the health of the populous. The boat building industry must keep up with these fast moving developments and evolve or face being pushed out of the market due to the high costs of complying with these regulations or losing the favour of the environmentally conscious purchaser. This Study will evaluate a specific motor yacht (Fairline Phantom 40) in terms of its environmental costs, the costs will then be compared against a number of current and developing substitute materials and methods and any changes which would be beneficial to both the environment and the builder will be recommended. The conclusions show no financial or technical reasons for not using natural fibre reinforced plastic in certain internal laminates, possible process changes to reduce emissions and motoryacht recycling options." @default.
