- W2215695086 abstract "This chapter describes the general principles and experimental methods of axonal transport. Axons extend from the postmitotic cell body during embryonic development, representing a major step in the full expression of neuronal differentiation. Once established in connection with a target cell, the axon is effectively maintained for the duration of the organism's life. Cytoskeletal elements have important roles both in the initial elongation process and in the maintenance of the mature axon. The membranous structures of the axon include several different types of membranous organelles. Electron micrographs of axons show a broad range of membrane-delimited organelles, including an anastomotic smooth endoplasmic reticulum, small tubules and vesicles, dense core granules, and prelysosomal structures. The axoplasmic matrix includes actin and clathrin. In addition, many other polypeptides are part of the SCb complex, and these may also be an integral part of the structure of the matrix. The value in having a specific means of blocking axonal transport led to the use of pharmacological agents to produce a damming of axonal transport. Another approach to the damming of axonal transport involves the use of low temperatures applied locally to the nerve, resulting in a reversible cold block of transport." @default.
