- W2215753032 abstract "IntroductionRecently the topics of ethnic interaction, assimilation and discrimination have become important topics of research in higher education (Smedley 434). A disturbing trend that is occurring more often is the lack of assimilation and integration among ethnically diverse groups of individuals, and this trend is affecting younger populations (Puffer 40). The purpose of the current study is to determine what techniques are particularly effective in reducing ethnocentrism among students and what activities are most likely to promote assimilation among ethnically diverse communities. We hypothesized that when ethnically diverse groups of individuals participate in a community service project with student mentors, such as a gardening program at a multiethnic community college, then reports of ethnocentrism would decrease. We further hypothesized that an inverse correlation would emerge as scores of ethnocentrism decline, reports of the importance, value and overall appreciation of community service work would significantly increase.Reducing Ethnocentrism via InterdependencyA key element that is critical in how groups relate, interact and communicate with each other is a psychological phenomenon that we describe as interdependence. Interdependence is described as the psychological awareness of one individual's dependency and need state on other individuals within the group to achieve a superordinate task. Although much work has been done recently in an effort to reduce prejudice and ethnocentrism (Stangor 486), these topics still remain to be a serious problem in ethnically diverse societies. Additionally, the topic of modern racism (subtle beliefs of ethnic superiority) continues to negatively impact societies that consist of ethnically diverse groups of individuals (McConahay 91).Kraut describes interdependency as a byproduct of individuals within groups working towards a common goal (1071). Interdependence is the very fabric and glue that binds individuals together, regardless of socioeconomic status, race or ethnicity. Interdependence has been a critical element that brings different people together since our evolutionary history in the establishment of clans (Buss 982). When individuals feel as though they have something that is vital to the group that can help to achieve mutually shared goals, the relationships within the group improve and a sense of wellness and purpose becomes established. For our purposes in the community service gardening project, our operational definition of interdependency addressed three basic paradigms: time (50 cumulative hours), shared gardening activities, and sharing meals together (e.g., barbeques).Prior research shows that when students from diverse racial backgrounds work together on a mutual task, perceptions of each other and relationships improve (Puffer 40; Hoffman and Wallach 1). In order to reduce ethnocentrism, we posited that when affluent Caucasian students (here the minority group) worked collaboratively with African American and Hispanic students (here the dominant groups), a mutual interdependent relationship would develop.Prejudice, ethnocentrism and discrimination have all become important topics of social research as many societies have become increasingly diverse in ethnicity and culture (Turner 1). Unfortunately, while many societies may show increases in the diversity of individuals who actually comprise a particular society or community, the actual rate of positive interaction and assimilation (i.e., community service work, recreational activities, etc.) among different ethnic groups appears to be declining. Crimes based on race, gender, religion or sexual identification (hate crimes) have actually increased in the last several years (2006 U. S. Department of Justice).Today, more than ever, there is a very important need to develop a variety of effective strategies that will facilitate interethnic communication and assimilation within our communities and school systems. …" @default.
