- W2215871008 abstract "Abstract The controversy about the compatibility of complementary/alternative medicine (CAM) with bio-medicine (BM) and evidence-based medicine (EBM) is partially due to dissimilar views of the relationship between theory and research. Some supporters of CAM, BM and EBM argue that theory is not important as long as an intervention is shown to work by an appropriate p value. However, Bayesian rules of inference posit that confirmation of a hypothesis requires not only a p -value below a certain threshold, but also a theoretical rationale and an estimate of the prior probability that the tested hypothesis is correct. Consequently, on the one hand, the role of the rationale for the study of an intervention remains under recognized, and the resulting “ p -value fallacy” may confound the interpretation of both BM and CAM research. On the other hand, differing estimates of the prior probability of benefit from CAM interventions may lead to differing interpretations of trials suggesting such benefit by CAM and BM researchers. Still, history abounds with unanticipated observations that led to paradigmatic shifts in BM reasoning. Therefore, incongruities between BM theory and CAM research should not be ignored. Chance observations and unexpected research findings should be viewed as generating credible hypotheses and be subsequently confirmed (or refuted) by independent trials." @default.
