- W2216016064 abstract "Publisher Summary This chapter explores that trypanosomal infections occur in many parts of the world. In spite of the great advances in chemotherapy, in the use of insecticides, and in knowledge of the disease and its vectors, trypanosomiasis in its various forms still dominates much of the continent. The trypanosomes are protozoa; the single-celled nucleated organisms moving in the body fluids of the infected host by means of undulations of an extension of the cell known as the flagellum. In all but one form of trypanosomiasis, the parasites are transferred from host to host by an insect vector. The story of the development of trypanocides is a classic of chemotherapy. The notion of chemotherapy for trypanosomiasis was thus conceived at a time made favourable by the awakening knowledge of microbiology and the rapid advances in organic chemistry. The chapter also reviews an important discovery that some trypanosome species could be routinely passaged in small laboratory animals that usually developed a fatal disease. The chapter discusses that the successful outcome of an investigation in chemotherapy depends largely on the existence of some such conditions. This is not to decry the importance of in vitro tests and the recent methods of tissue culture: these are important in showing antiparasite properties in a drug; but those factors relating to the host, such as toxicity, metabolism, distribution, and concentration of the drug, are so complex that only experiments in animals really decide whether a drug is worthy of trial." @default.
